Andrew Anagnost, cello

Andrew Anagnost is an active performer, teacher, and session musician in Wilmington and Eastern North Carolina. A Wilmington native, he began his studies in 1989 at the Wilmington Academy of Music with Alberta Liva.

After leaving Wilmington he continued his studies at UNC-Chapel Hill under the tutelage of Brent Wissick and also with Dr. Richard Thomas when back in Wilmington during summers. While at Chapel Hill he studied modern cello, Baroque cello, and viola da gamba and earned his Bachelor’s degree in cello performance in 2007. In addition to his classical studies he explored other genres and played in the UNC-Chapel Hill Jazz combos on cello and in Charanga Carolina (a contemporary Latin Jazz ensemble).

Andrew began teaching cello lessons in January 2009 and has taught students with a wide range of ages and goals. He has been a member of the Durham Symphony Orchestra since 2014 and has also performed with the Tallis Chamber Orchestra.

Though he has extensive training and education in the classical realm, Andrew has a deep passion for finding other musical avenues to explore with the cello. His interests have led him to play, in addition to classical music, jazz, rock, indie-rock, Latin, folk, and blue grass. He has had the opportunity to record with numerous bands over the years including The Dead Tongues and Sylvan Esso. Andrew also had the incredible privilege of being a member of the nationally and internationally touring band Lost in the Trees from 2007-2013. Recording on four studio albums and playing shows from the The ATP Festival in Minehead England to the Lincoln Center in New York City to Millennium Park in Chicago to South by Southwest in Austin Texas, he spent six years living his dream.

Andrew is extremely excited to be part of the Brooklyn Arts Music Academy and looks forward to contributing to a vibrant and ever growing music scene in his beloved hometown.
