Music is life!

Music Is Life!

Music is Life! is a program of the Brooklyn Arts Music Academy that engages 3-5 year old children with free weekly music instruction in partnership with Head Start and New Hanover County Schools. Music Is Life! classes benefit students far beyond the realm of music. Music Is Life! builds resiliency skills for children who have experienced Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE’s) by fostering social-emotional growth, and promoting cognitive, language, and physical development. Building resilience in children can help mitigate long-term negative impacts after ACE’s have already occurred.

What does Music Is Life! offer?

  • Brings free weekly music instruction to preschool students

  • Introduces preschool children to playing violin and harp

  • Creates a safe, engaging, and fun musical outlet for children

Why is music instruction important for young children?

Ongoing research supports the importance of music education in early childhood.

“Resiliency—to bounce back after a disturbing event—is not something we are born with; it must be learned….There is no vehicle more joyful and playful for providing such training than early childhood music and movement.”
— Neuroscience Educator Dr. Dee Joy Coulter
