Scholarships for Music Lessons

Brooklyn Arts Music Academy believes that music changes lives, and we want every child with a passion for music to have the chance to learn, no matter their family’s financial situation.

Our need-based scholarships are part of our Music is Life! program and are designed to make music lessons accessible to Wilmington families.

Award decisions are made by the BAMA Board of Directors' Scholarship Committee and may be full or partial scholarships. Each music lessons scholarship includes individual and group music lessons. You do not need to own an instrument to apply. If your child is awarded a scholarship, we can also provide an instrument (violin, viola, cello, harp, or keyboard) and music lesson books for use during their enrollment in lessons. Ownership of musical instruments remains with Brooklyn Arts Music Academy.

Continuation of the award through the academic year is contingent upon:

  • Regular attendance at individual lessons and monthly group classes. More than two excused absences may result in the termination of assistance.

  • Reasonable progress in lessons that reflects regular practice at home.

Current awards are not automatically renewed each year. A new application must be submitted for each student yearly.

What the Scholarship Committee Looks For

Scholarship applications are reviewed by the BAMA Board of Directors' Scholarship Committee using the following criteria:

  • Financial need – Scholarships are prioritized for families with the greatest financial need.

  • Musical potential and commitment – Evaluated through teacher recommendations, prior participation in BAMA’s music program, and interest shown by the student.

  • Returning students in good standing – Students who have shown consistent attendance and progress in lessons will receive additional consideration.

  • Participation in Music is Life! preschool classes – Children who have been part of our early childhood music program are given priority.
